New Republican Party Platform Calls for Mandatory E-Verify and Self-Deportation

On August 23, 2012, The New York Times reported that the recently adopted Republican Party platform includes a provision requiring all employers to use the federal government’s E-Verify program to confirm workers’ employment eligibility. Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who has authored laws against illegal immigration in Arizona and other states, proposed the measure, stating “If you really want to create a job tomorrow, you can remove an illegal alien today.”

The platform also calls for robust border enforcement, opposition to “any forms of amnesty,” and the self-deportation of undocumented immigrants through “humane procedures to encourage illegal aliens to return home voluntarily.”
