DHS Secretary Napolitano Describes Worksite Enforcement Efforts in Congressional Testimony
with Laura Foote Reiff
In her July 2012 testimony before the House Judiciary Committee, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano provided a telling snapshot of the agency’s high-profile work in the area of immigration compliance enforcement. According to the Secretary’s remarks, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has audited more than 8,079 employers suspected of knowingly hiring undocumented workers in the U.S., debarred 726 companies and individuals, and levied more than $87.9 million in monetary penalties since the beginning of 2009.
In addition, the Secretary noted that employer enrollment in the government’s E-Verify program has more than doubled since January 2009, and now totals more than 385,000 participating companies at 1.1 million hiring sites. In 2011, more than 17 million queries were run through E-Verify and prospective employees now have the option of confirming the accuracy of government records related to their employment eligibility status by accessing the E-Verify Self Check program.
